Dialogue options allow the player to pragmatically focus on the task at hand, finding directions to 5 Dogwood Drive, or to take the time to share stories and wax philosophical with the people they encounter along the way. Equus Oils is a massive horse-shaped building, the first of many oddities that the characters accept without question. Players can choose the name and gender of Conway’s dog, or leave it nameless. A character’s history can be altered by dialogue choices, but their destination remains the same. In a reverse of normal storytelling conventions for games, the backstory of most characters is malleable for players, while the events of the game are largely set in stone. Kentucky Route Zero’s narrative is equal parts open-ended and crushingly inevitable. Players who finish the game will have a new context for the early chapters, and the unexpected connections that emerge only in hindsight. The story of Kentucky Route Zero itself is a loop of sorts, with the events of the ending shaping the story’s beginning. The namesake highway is portrayed as a loop that inexplicably carries travelers to strange destinations. Over the course of its episodes, Kentucky Route Zero touches on themes of debt and addiction, loss and obsession, and ultimately the journey to find a place to call home. ![]()
