These are all just guesses and assumptions on my part. I'm no gardening expert, but I would think that since lettuce is a water bearing vegetable that it needs large amounts of water. Maybe somewhere that has plentiful amounts of rainfall, and that isn't a dry and arid place. I would imagine it's not something that can be grown just anywhere, but needs to be cultivated in the right atmosphere.
